Invisible Men: An Anthology from the Westminster Menswear Archive

The Invisible Men exhibition presents over 180 garments exclusively drawn from the Westminster Menswear Archive, spanning the last 120 years of British menswear. The exhibition is organised into twelve thematic sections and explores the language of menswear design by juxtaposing designer garments with military, functional, and utilitarian outfits.

At the core of Invisible Men is an examination of how menswear design often replicates archetypal functional garments originally intended for specific industrial, technical, or military purposes. The exhibition illustrates how designers have subtly subverted these traditional forms, creating garments that reflect the evolving nature of masculinity while remaining largely invisible within mainstream fashion discourse.

This catalogue offers an in-depth look at the exhibition, providing insights into the garments and the themes they represent. From the heroism embedded in functional workwear to the overlooked stories of men’s uniforms, Invisible Men sheds light on the complex relationship between men and their clothing.
